Ghyll's shelf for low-cloud days

Eight browser games for the days
the mist comes down past the intake wall

Some mornings the cloud settles below the crags and the fell walk turns into a kettle-and-window day. Ghyll keeps eight free browser games for exactly that: a horse farm, a frontier camp, a zoo, pirate waters, a cheerful hospital, kart scraps, hidden-object rooms and a village with an empire in it. Nothing needs installing, and signing up at each one costs nothing.

Horse Farm

Horse farm sim · Farm, town & zoo

Think of a hill farm down in the dale, only with horses as the heart of it. You groom, feed and train each horse, then work the land around the stable so crops and upgrades pay for the next arrival. The goals are soft rather than pushy, which makes it an easy thing to tend between showers.

Good for
Anyone who wants a calm, animal-centred farm to look after.

Your first session
  1. Settle the first horses in before you spend on anything else.
  2. Keep a crop in the ground so the stable never runs short.

WildGuns key artStrategy & war

WildGuns

Wild West strategy

You throw in your lot with one of three nations racing for a dusty frontier and raise a camp from bare ground. Materials pay for buildings, and trading, raiding and claiming contested land against other players decide who ends up holding it.

  • A few short check-ins a day
  • Desktop browser
Good for & first steps

Good for: Strategy fans who fancy a western setting and a territory race.

Your first session
  1. Read up on the three nations before choosing, as the pick shapes your whole game.
  2. Keep material production running before you spend on anything showy.
  3. Make friends with nearby players early; allies make contested ground far safer.

Zoo 2: Animal Park key artFarm, town & zoo

Zoo 2: Animal Park

Zoo management

A zoo of your own widens enclosure by enclosure as you breed and house animals and keep the visitors fed and happy. Care rounds, decorating and a steady trickle of new species give it a calm rhythm that suits short and long visits alike.

  • 10 to 20 minutes
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Good for & first steps

Good for: Animal lovers who enjoy tending a park over many visits.

Your first session
  1. Follow the opening tasks; they unlock the first enclosures in a sensible order.
  2. Keep food stalls and paths tidy so visitors stay content.
  3. Expand one enclosure at a time rather than spreading thin.

Seafight key artRole-play & adventure

Seafight

Pirate naval adventure

You captain a ship across a world of buccaneers, trading broadsides with rival vessels while hunting for buried treasure. Better hulls, sails and cannons arrive as you sail on, and every voyage makes the ship a little more your own.

  • 20 to 40 minutes
  • Desktop browser
Good for & first steps

Good for: Anyone who likes a pirate yarn with some real-time sea battles.

Your first session
  1. Learn the ship controls in calm water before picking a fight.
  2. Put early upgrades into the hull so the ship survives longer.
  3. Choose your battles with care until the ship can take a few hits.

Kapi Hospital key artBusiness & tycoon

Kapi Hospital

Hospital tycoon

A light-hearted hospital to run: treat the patients who turn up, hire staff, buy equipment and add wards as the place fills. Research unlocks new treatments, so the caseload and the building grow together at a pace you set yourself.

  • 15 to 30 minutes
  • Desktop browser
Good for & first steps

Good for: Players who like cheerful management games with a clear to-do list.

Your first session
  1. See to the waiting patients before buying anything new.
  2. Hire staff to match the wards you actually have open.

Smash Karts key artAction & arcade

Smash Karts

Kart combat

Quick, silly mayhem in a kart: drive round an arena grabbing weapon crates, then let fly with machine guns and rockets or drop mines on up to seven rivals. Matches last about three minutes, and new characters and karts unlock as you keep racing.

  • A three-minute match or several
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Good for & first steps

Good for: Anyone after a short, noisy blast rather than a long project.

Your first session
  1. Spend the first match learning to steer and drift round the arena.
  2. Grab every weapon crate you pass; an empty kart is an easy target.
  3. Keep moving, as sitting still is the quickest way to be hit.

Hidden4Fun key artPuzzle & casual

Hidden4Fun

Hidden-object puzzles

A big free library of hand-painted scenes in which you hunt down a listed set of objects against a timer, spending a few hints when you are stuck. Themed series wander through shops, pets, cooking and adventure, ten quiet minutes at a time.

  • About 10 minutes a scene
  • Desktop browser
Good for & first steps

Good for: Anyone who wants a peaceful puzzle rather than a campaign.

Your first session
  1. Pick a themed series you like the look of and stick with it.
  2. Sweep the whole scene slowly before you go hunting for one item.
  3. Save your hints for the last stubborn object or two.

Travian key artStrategy & war

Travian

Ancient empire strategy

A small village becomes the seed of an empire as you choose a tribe, grow fields and buildings, and send out settlers. Alliances plot across one shared map for months, all building towards the race for a wonder of the world.

  • Several short visits a day
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available
Good for & first steps

Good for: Patient strategists who enjoy long campaigns with a team.

Your first session
  1. Pick a tribe that suits how often you can log in.

01

Free, and what the studios sell

All eight take a free sign-up and can be enjoyed for months without paying; tending, building, sailing, racing and puzzling are all included.

The studios do sell extras on the side, such as premium currency, looks and speed-ups. Lots of players never open that shop, and the account settings at most studios can limit spending on a shared family computer.

02

Starting on a grey morning

The button under each title opens that game's official home in a new tab. Register there with an email and your stable, ward, camp or kart is ready within a minute or two.

Most of them begin with a guided introduction. Stay with it to the end, because it walks you through menus and resources a step at a time.

03

Long games and short ones

The farm, zoo, hospital, frontier and empire carry on while you are out on the fell, so a look-in over breakfast and another after tea keeps them ticking over.

Smash Karts, Hidden4Fun and Seafight are the opposite: you sit down for a match, a scene or a voyage and stop when it ends. Mix the two kinds to suit how much of the day the rain has taken.

04

Keeping logins on the right side of the wall

Each studio holds its own login, so type it only on that studio's own site. Use a different password for every game and turn on a second login step wherever it is offered.

Genuine support staff never ask for your password. Anyone offering free extras in exchange for your sign-in details is after the account itself, so ignore them.

How the eight earned a place by the fire

  • Every one opens in an ordinary desktop browser, with nothing to download before you start.
  • A free account at each gives you the proper game, and plenty of players go a very long way without spending a thing.
  • They range from a calm stable round and a quiet picture hunt to frantic kart scraps and months-long alliance campaigns.
  • All of them have kept going for years, with a working studio behind each one and players still about.

No. All eight run in an up-to-date desktop browser. Horse Farm, Zoo 2: Animal Park, Smash Karts and Travian also have a mobile app, purely as an extra; WildGuns, Seafight, Kapi Hospital and Hidden4Fun are desktop browser games.

No. Accounts cost nothing and the full game is open to you; any in-game shop is a choice, never a requirement.

No. Separate studios own and run them; each button here simply opens that studio's official page.

No. They come from different studios, so you sign up at each one separately.

Horse Farm, Zoo 2: Animal Park, Kapi Hospital, WildGuns and Travian carry on without you. Smash Karts, Hidden4Fun and Seafight are played a match, a scene or a voyage at a time.

Horse Farm or Hidden4Fun. Zoo 2: Animal Park and Kapi Hospital are close behind, while Smash Karts is the loud one.

In several of them. Travian is built around alliances, WildGuns places you in one of three nations, Seafight shares its seas with other captains and Smash Karts puts up to seven rivals in each match. The farm, zoo, hospital and picture hunts are mostly played alone.
